So, here I sit, literally 30 days away from turning 30. What better way to close out this chapter of my twenties than by completing an official Whole30 challenge? I fell in love with whole 30 about four years ago, and have followed the principles that I’ve learned from that experience ever since. There are many different reasons people take on the Whole30 challenge; some do it because they’d like to lose a few pounds, some do it because they’d like to feel better, some do it because they’ve heard the amazing benefits that their friends have experienced such as better sleep, clearer skin, and tiger blood! “Whole30 is NOT a diet, it isn’t a quick fix, and it isn’t even a weight loss program. The Whole30 is designed to change your life.” And change my life it did. I found Whole30 because after years of battling an auto-immune disease and suffering the increasing negative effects of very strong medication…. I needed a big change.
First of all, I was exhausted ALL. THE. TIME. No matter how many hours of sleep I got: 8, 4, even 12(!) hours of sleep… I would wake up just as tired every day and not be able to function without an afternoon nap. There were times that I literally had to pull over on the side of the road to sleep for 15 minutes because I could not keep my eyes open to make it home safely. At the time, I figured it was a side effect of my medication, but I also didn’t feel that I could do anything about it. My medication (Remicade) was the only thing that was keeping my UC in remission and I figured I just had to deal with the side effects because hey, at least the Remicade was keeping me out of the hospital right? Wrong! I finally got fed up with being exhausted, so I started to look up natural ways to increase my energy and by a miracle, I found Whole30. All these promises of deeper sleep, more energy, and “tiger blood” had me hooked from the beginning! In November 2014 I started my first Whole30 journey, and I’ve done 1 or 2 more in the mean time as a re-set when old habits start creeping back in. I learned so much! I was sleeping better, I was well-rested when I woke up and had energy all day long! Not to mention, I even managed to lose about 10 pounds without counting a single calorie! My skin cleared up, my moods were better… I really like who I am when I’m following Whole30. I feel like a person who is in control of her health, who is in control of her decisions, who is in control of her life. I want to enter into my thirties feeling “in control”.
So while my goals for this Whole30 are more than simply vanity reasons, I know people like to see Before/After Pics, measurement and weight results, so I will be posting those at the end as well. Throughout these past 4 years, I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs, it hasn’t been a perfect journey by any means! But the struggle is what makes the triumph so satisfying. So here we go again! The #dirty30journey is on!
